At first glance, the line from the Apostles’ Creed — “He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary” — sounds like a seasonal reference pulled from a Christmas card. For some, it’s sweet. For others, it’s a supernatural stretch. But make no mistake: this claim is foundational, not decorative. It’s not just about how Jesus came into the world. It’s about why — and what that means for us now.
In our latest video, we dig into what this bold line really means. By the end, you’ll see why the virgin birth isn’t just believable — it’s essential.
1. Why the Virgin Birth?
Scripture says Jesus was born of a virgin — not as a magic trick, but as a theological necessity. If Jesus had been born through ordinary means, He would have inherited the same sinful nature we all carry. Instead, He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born sinless, fully divine and fully human. That makes Him uniquely qualified to bridge the gap between a broken humanity and a holy God.
2. This Was God’s Plan All Along
Long before Mary ever heard from the angel Gabriel, the prophet Isaiah foretold it:
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)
This wasn’t myth-making after the fact. This was divine design, centuries in motion. God didn’t improvise. He executed a plan only He could write — a plan that centers on His Son entering the world not through power and prestige, but through humility and surrender.
3. Fully God. Fully Man. Fully Intentional.
The virgin birth confirms something essential: Jesus is not a halfway Savior. He’s not just divine. He’s not just human. He is both. Hebrews 4:15 tells us He was tempted like we are, yet without sin. That’s the kind of Savior we need — one who can relate to us and rescue us.
Jesus entered into our pain, our problems, and our mess — not by accident, but by choice. The incarnation is God’s ultimate act of empathy. He didn’t wait for us to clean up. He stepped in while we were still a mess.
4. Your Turn to Respond
So how should we live in light of this?
- Trust in the God Who initiates — He moved first in salvation; He’s still moving now.
- Believe in the impossible — With God, virgins conceive and dead hearts come alive.
- Live humbly — Jesus chose the cradle before the cross. We’re called to choose the low place too.
